According to an article I read, archaeolgists have discovered what they say is the oldest survivng brain in Britain. The brain, which dates back at least two thousand years, was discovered by Rachel Cubitt during an excavation at York University. Rachel described how she felt something moving within inside the skull when she was cleaning it. To find out what was inside, Rachel peered through the base of the skull. She found a yellow substance that at first she could not recognize. Later she remembered an important lecture she had once been given and learned that the substance was a brain. The brain was quickly analyzed and archaeologists determined that it was very old and dated back to the Iron Age. They believe that the skull, which was found by itself, may have been a ritual offering. This discovery is a very important one and can help scientists determine how structures like these can survive.
