Yesterday, I read an article about new bikes. Trek, the largest domestic bicycle manufacturer, has created a bike that does not utilize a chain. Instead, the bike uses a belt which is said to be a low-maintenance replacement of the chain. The belts, which are made out of tough, carbon-fiber composite, won't rust, can't be cut, and won't stretch or slip. Also, with this technology, you no longer have to worry about getting your pant leg dirty, or even worse, stuck in the chain. Trek plans to release its first chainless bike early in December and they have been pretty optimistic. But, since the bikes are not yet on the market, it is hard to tell whether or not they will be successful with riders. It's expected that, from a maintenance perspective, users will love the new bikes.
