Outside Reading Blog Post #6

In a recent study, researchers have learned that a new gene is linked with male pattern baldness. This gene, found on the X chromosome, affects the androgen receptor which is linked to male hormones. Unfortunately, fourteen percent of males who were tested had some variation of the gene. These men are seven times more likely to become bald as they grow older. However, there is some good news. The finding is being used to research female pattern baldness. Scientists are unsure whether or not the same genes have the same effect in both men and women. They hope that this discovery will facilitate their research. Although the discovery is somewhat of a breakthrough, scientists still agree that many genes have not yet been found. They also agree that more research needs to be conducted. Afterall, some men with genes known to cause male baldness still have a full head of hair.
